GSUP 1, Day 3: Reducing Food Waste

Day three of the COP26 Global Scale-Up Programme has entailed a series of presentations from leading, global enterprises on innovative and technological solutions to meet and improve food waste.

With a welcome from the Minister for Green Skills, Circular Economy and Biodiversity, a keynote from Craig Hanson, Vice President of Food, Forests, Water & the Ocean at World Resources Institute and live in-person and virtual discussions from companies based in Germany, Denmark and Brazil.

Blue Lobster (Denmark)

Blue Lobster changes the way fish is bought and sold, by cutting out the long row of traditional middlemen in the industry. This is through a direct-to-consumer marketplace, sustainable fishermen and buyers of all sizes can therefore trade directly with one another. Through these direct sales, fishermen can earn a much better wage, customers get their fish delivered straight from the harbour, this saves days of transporting, ensuring better quality produce.

Alpha-Protein (Germany)

Alpha Protein aims to disrupt the food and feed industry by establishing the cost-efficient and large scale production of mealworms as a sustainable protein source. Making use of the ever tons of food that cannot meet customers’ expectations and the food waste industry and households produce. Their innovative technology will help to improve the competitiveness of insects in the food and feed market, solving the future food shortages of the world’s growing population.

Lemobs (Brazil)

 

Lemobs solution supports municipal governments in managing school food by optimizing all the steps involved, from school food orders to student food evaluations. It manages menu planning, inventory and costs control, monitors child development (weight, height, allergies, intolerances, etc.) and aids with requests and deliveries of food. An intelligent assistant is used to: encourage greater use of sustainable and local family farming produce (VFL); provide menu compatibility with stock levels and nutritional adequacy, and we automatically place food orders considering meal planning. We provide Software as a Service (SaaS) to public schools in Brazil at low cost, including the software, the tablet, and access to the internet.

TooGoodToGo (Denmark)

TooGoodToGo responded to the nonsensical nature of food waste both at the industrial and retail levels. Founder was on the Nestle Management Programme when she became aware of the sheer volume of waste. Together with her Co-Founder and several entrepreneurs across Europe, the website, then the app was developed and launched, growing to cover 16 countries across two continents. The innovative online marketplace/app connects consumers with surplus food from businesses such as cafés, restaurants, and supermarkets at the end of the day through geo-localisation. This way we ensure that no edible food goes to waste and with that take direct climate action.
